Hon Mun marine protected area located in Nha Trang Bay, including the islands as Hon Tre, Hon Mieu, Hon Tam, Hon Mot, Hon Mun, Hon Cau, Hon Vung, Hon Rom, Hon Noc and the surrounding waters. The area is about 160km² covering about 38 square kilometers and approximately 122 square kilometers of water surface around the islands.

Since 2001, the Hon Mun marine protected area – the first marine conservation project in Vietnam was officially born. The project was implemented by the Ministry of Fisheries, Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee and IUCN - The International Union for Conservation of Nature. Project was sponsored by the Global Environment Fund through the World Bank; Royal Danish Government through DANIDA and IUCN - The International Union for Conservation of Nature, with reciprocal capital of Vietnam government.

Nha Trang Bay is one of the most important areas for marine conservation and marine tourism in Vietnam. Coral reef has international importance and biodiversity of the highest species in Vietnam with more than 350 species of hard coral to create reef in which 40 species was recorded for Vietnam, over 230 species of reef fishes, 112 species of mollusks, 112 species of crustaceans, 27 species of echinoderms, 69 species of algae and 7 species of seaweeds ... The aim of the project is to "Preserve a typical pattern of marine biodiversity which has international importance and are threatened "and achieve the goal "helping the communities in the island improve their lives and co-operate with other stakeholders to protect and effectively manage marine biology biodiversity at Hon Mun Marine Protected Area, creating a collaborative management model for marine protected areas in Vietnam”.
Survey results of biology biodiversity and habitat of marine protected area showed that Hon Mun Island is a place that has the most abundant and diverse coral reef in Vietnam. It has international scale because it has similar species in the world center of coral diversity in the India-Pacific region. And they also found 340 in more than 800 species of hard coral in the world.

In the dark stone caves of Hon Mun, annually bird’s nest builds its nest here. Due to the terrain of the island is very close to the hot sea current from the equator to be appropriate with the growing condition of coral and a variety of tropical marine creatures gathering here, the bottom of Hon Mun island is a set of population which has abundant and diversity marine creatures, an interesting and useful place for observation, research of researchers for marine life, oceanography and visitors want to learn about the sea. Arriving to Hon Mun, travelers can go snorkeling or glass bottom boat to see the colorful coral reefs with many different species of marine life.

In Hon Mun, just about 10 meters in depth, you can admire the fantastic views of the aquarium place. From the manifold beauty of "fields" coral stretches of sight with all sorts of corals as red coral, antlers coral ... to scenes "lively activities" of the subjects living aquatic environment. You can delight in the fun with all kinds of colorful fish. Sometimes, you also meet the giant groupers, weighs 7-8kg; or 3-4 m long sea- eel, or herd of huge anchovy with the area on 1km² gliding people ... If you like adventure, you can dive deeper. At a depth of less than 18m, it indeed explores. Going down that deep is no longer the beauty of coral, but there are many caves to explore. There are 10-15m deep caves; visitors must use lights to observe the marine life specialized to live in darkness as shrimp, squid, lobsters, rays...
